Frohe Weihnachten!!! Merry Christmas in German, Bavarian specifically, as the greeting is regional. Where my Mom was born. Missing her terribly today, as I do each Christmas. How lovely she always made it for my brother and I. We opened our gifts on Christmas Eve night, another Bavarian tradition. Mom & Dad would close the living room door, Dad doing his best “Ho, ho, ho. Merry Christmas Mrs. Smith.” As I am 8 years older than my brother, I would be psyching him up in the other room. “Santa must have left you a lot, he was here long this year.” I can still see his little face, eyes hopeful and bright, (praying for those Rock Em Sock Em Robots). Then theyour parents would ring a beautiful Christmas bell and that meant “come and get it.” The stockings did not have smaller gifts in it, only food treats, another Bavarian tradition. So it was tangerines, whole nuts, German chocolates Dad had picked up on 86th Street in NYC, Marzipan candies in such beautifully artistic shapes your heart would not let you eat them. Christmas at home, with my Bavarian Mom and all-American Dad. Would give the world for just one more, and know I am not alone. Buon Natale my Italian friends (99% of my friends are Italian). God bless us everyone, and our Mommies and Daddies no longer on Earth. Frohe Weihnachten!!!
I can actually imagine the scene, Irene. So beautiful that you have and cherish those memories, and I am thrilled you shared them here on the Madness blog.
